SHILLONG: The Opposition alliance, the Meghalaya People’s Front (MPF), has expressed serious concern over the prevailing law and order situation in Garo Hills.

“We are really concerned about the unfortunate incidents which have occurred in Garo Hills. The situation at present is very tense. We pray for peace and normalcy,” MPF secretary and NPP legislator James PK Sangma said here on Monday.

He urged the people not to indulge in rumour mongering since it could further aggravate the already tense situation.

NPP appeals for peace

The National People’s Party (NPP), Tura, has also appealed for peace in all the districts of Garo Hills following the incident of attempted rape of a mentally challenged woman from Wadanang, Tura, that was followed by random assaults on the three perpetrators of the crime and certain citizens of Tura by some anti-social elements that left two dead and several injured on the night of June 21.

“The District Unit of Tura NPP opines that the incident was an unfortunate one. It further appeals to all the citizens communities of Tura in particular and all the districts of Garo Hills and neighbouring states in general to maintain calm, composure and peaceful co-existence and not to be swayed by rumours and hearsays,” the NPP stated in a release.
