SHILLONG: SOS Village Shillong recently commemorated its founder father’s 94th birth anniversary, Dr. Hermann Gmeiner, who is known as the founder father of the SOS Children’s Village movement in the world.
The SOS Worldwide clocked Dr Gmeiner 94th Birth anniversary this year, celebrated as the SOS Day on June 23.
SOS Children’s Village is an independent, non-governmental, social development organization providing family-based care for children without parental care in India since 1964.
The brain child behind the noble cause, Dr. Hermann Gmeiner was the founder father of the children’s village movement in the world. From 1949 until his death he dedicated his life to SOS Children’s Villages. Born in 1919 in a small community of Alberschwende in Austria to a farming family with several children, he lost his mother at the age of five.
Together with friends, Hermann Gmeiner founded the association Societas Socialis (SOS) in 1949.
He later renamed it to SOS-Kinderdorf and it became known in English as SOS Children’s Villages.
