Centre sanctions additional forces for Garo Hills

 SHILLONG: Responding to the State government’s SOS to send additional forces to tackle worsening law and order situation in Garo Hills, the Centre has sanctioned six companies of CRPF and four companies of BSF.

Informing this here on Tuesday, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma hoped that the situation would not deteriorate further.

“It is important that all of us ensure that we do not fall prey to rumours and gossip which unnecessarily through life out of gear,” Dr Sangma said.

On Sunday night, eight migrant coal miners were killed and three others seriously injured at Garegittim and Nongalbibra areas in South Garo Hills district after miscreants in large numbers attacked them.

“We are confident of tackling any untoward incident,” Dr Sangma said adding that the state government has ensured that all districts are on their toes to thwart off any attempt to dislodge peace and tranquility by anyone.

He, however, maintained that the state government is continuously engaged in talks with the Assam government at the highest level to normalise the situation.

The Chief Minister informed that he had spoken to his Assam counterpart at length requesting him to take all precautionary measures for the well being of these people. “The matter was also taken seriously by the Assam government, which has also initiated necessary steps to ensure that normalcy is not disturbed,” Dr Sangma added.

Referring to the fact that there is a sizeable ethnic population of the Meghalaya origin that have been residing along the inter-state boundary between Meghalaya and Assam for years together, Dr Sangma said “Such people are often fall prey to anti-social elements and hence the government is concerned about their safety and security.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Sangma informed that he has convened a meeting of all MLAs from Garo Hills on Wednesday at the Committee room of Yojana Bhavan to discuss the matter pertaining to the present situation with all the legislators.
