IMPHAL: At least 10 volunteers of the student wing of the Joint Coordination Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) were injured on Thursday after the police resorted to heavy lathi charge without warning after around 200 volunteers of the wing tried to storm into the Manipur Assembly.

The JCILPS took to the streets to demand the introduction of ILP in Manipur.

The protesters coming from different sides first gathered in front of LMS Law College at Chingmeirong, Imphal. A large number of police personnel also arrived at the scene. Soon after police lathi charged at the protesters without warning, injuring 10 of them after a skirmish ensued between the two sides.

The police also detained five student protesters, who were later freed.

Addressing the media shortly after the incident at the All Manipur Student’s Union (AMSU) office, JCILMS student wing convener M Angamba condemned police action against the student protesters. He called upon all political parties and the people of the state to join hands in the campaign for implementation of ILP system under Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulations, 1873.

BJP for immediate implementation of ILP

The BJP has demanded immediate implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in Manipur by passing a separate legislation in the state Assembly.

Enforcement of ILP system in the state was possible without the consent of the central government by passing a legislation in the House, party spokesman S Tikendra told reporters here last evening. A spokesman of the Joint Action Committee on ILP system, which has been spearheading the stir for implementation of the system, said outsiders had outnumbered the total tribal population in the hill districts of the state.
