THE VOICE of women has found a variety of expressions in recent years: in poetry, fiction, academic writings of different kinds, in political stands taken across the spectrum of political ideologies and most effectively in music. Mumbai-based singer Garima Yagnik, granddaughter of former NEHU vice-chancellor Mrinal Miri, has recorded a song with her aunt Alka Yagnik in support of the women’s cause. The title of the song is “With it” and it is a very apt example of the fusion of Indian and western music. Alka sings the opening lines in Hindi and the rest of the song is in English sung by Garima. The quality of Garima’s voice matches her aunt’s although the two voices are very different from each other and therefore make a fascinating harmonic combination. The song has received wide acclaim from listeners in India, UK, Germany, US and even far off Brazil. It has been trending on Facebook and Twitter. Garima was also interviewed in London by Sunrise Radio for the moving song, which has been released on the internet and is available at https://www.twitmusic.com/thealkayagnik/songs/with-it–3.
