SHILLONG: Chief Secretary WMS Pariat on Tuesday said that the Sohra Ecological Project will neither be stopped nor it will be transferred to other areas as the name of the project itself implies that it has to be implemented in Sohra area.

Assuring a delegation of traditional chiefs of Hima Sohra, Siatsohpen, Mawsmai and other areas on Tuesday, Pariat said the project would continue and it would be further improved to provide convergence of objectives from different departments.

The delegation led by Chairman of the Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya, John F Kharshiing, who met the Chief Secretary on Tuesday, also submitted a memorandum urging the State Government not to abandon the project which has had positive impact in Sohra.

Following the meeting, Kharshiing informed that the Chief Secretary has stated that the Government would consider conducting an evaluation and review of the ongoing Sohra Ecological Project between the concerned departments of Soil, Tourism and Forest with the traditional chiefs and villages covered by the project.

Kharshiing also informed that he has sought for a meeting between the stake holders and the departments concerned to remove the communication gap that has arisen with regards to the project.

“The Chief Secretary has requested the traditional chiefs to share their observations on the implantation of the project to provide an opportunity to the departments concerned to evaluate, review and improve the implementation of such projects for the benefit of the people,” Kharshiing added.
