SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Wednesday urged the State Government to keep the implementation of “Aadhaar” scheme, a unique identification project, on hold in the State.

A delegation of KSU members on Wednesday met the Home Minister Roshan Warjri to put forward its demand.

The KSU delegation told Warjri that before implementing the Aadhaar scheme in the State the Government should take the opinions of the stakeholders and also put in place a mechanism for controlling influx into the state.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the student body president Daniel Khyriem said the Home Minister had assured the delegation that the Government would invite all the stakeholders for discussions before implementing the scheme.

According to KSU, the Government must hold discussions with Rangbah Shnongs and other stakeholders before implementing it in the state as Meghalaya has large number of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Nepal. The KSU also stated that a mechanism must be put in place to authenticate documents before issuing the UIN (Unique Identification Number ).

The enrollment for UIN rolled in the municipal area with the enrollment of the then Meghalaya governor RS Mooshahary in June. The biometric enrollment is a part of the second phase of data collection for the National Population Register (NPR).
