SHILLONG: There seems to be no end to the incidents of rape against women and children in the State and more and more cases of rapes are being reported from different parts of the State.

It may be mentioned that this year till April, 63 rape cases have been reported from the entire State.

Speaking to reporters here recently, East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang said that the rapists usually target minors from lower income group as they stay alone at home while their parents are out for their earning and they are most vulnerable to such crimes. Reacting to a query, the police official said that the State police has a women cell which is totally dedicated for investigating into the crimes against women.

This year alone there were 14 reports of molestation and 2 cases of eve-teasing, adding to the 11 cases reported for kidnapping and abduction of women.

According to Kharkrang, the department needs more women police stations to check on crimes that are committed in far flung areas of the district.

The State police have also suggested different localities to come up with the crèche centres where children can be looked after well in absence of parents.
