Wansuk Syiem places demand for passport offices in State From Our Special

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya, Ms Wansuk Syiem, on Monday urged the Union Minister for External Affairs, Salman Khurshid to immediately open passport offices in Shillong and Tura to ease the burden of hundreds of people from the hill state.

In a letter to the Union Minister, Ms Wansuk said that people from the State face difficulty in travelling to Guwahati to obtain their passport. There has been much expansion of passport offices network all over the country and even the Tier II cities. The volume of passport applications from the State well justifies the demand for a Regional Passport Office, she added.

Incidentally, the State Government has already handed over the old office of the Directorate of Sports at Lower Lachumiere after necessary face-lift to the Regional Passport Office, Guwahati, for setting up of a full-fledged passport office in Meghalaya.

The only thing left is for the External Affairs Ministry and the Regional Passport Office, Guwahati, to install the required machineries and appoint officers for
