OWAI: NGOs in East Jaintia Hills District comprising of KSU, AJYWO, and the FKJGP has opposed the move of the government to pay only Rs 1 lakh to the family of victims who were electrocuted in Khliehriat West, East Jaintia Hills recently.

The three NGOs alleged that the government has took a long time to decide for the compensation in connection with the Khliehriat incident whereas whereas in a very short time, compensation was provided to the families of the coal labourers involved in an accident in “The victims in Garo hills are not even residents of the State and still, the government has paid Rs. 3 lakh each while for the victims in Khliehriat the government is planning to pay only Rs. 1 lakh which is unfair”, said the AJYWO president, MH Dkhar. It may be mentioned here that in the tragic incident, seven members from two families, mostly students, were electrocuted in Khliehriat West village in East Jaintia Hills District on June 26 due to leakage of power from an 11 KV pole into the nearby water pipes connected to a house led to the tragedy.
