Manchester United set to take

newly-signed Zaha on Asia tour

LONDON: England winger Wilfried Zaha will play a part in Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia, new manager David Moyes said on Wednesday. The Ivory Coast-born 20-year-old, the final signing by Moyes’ predecessor Alex Ferguson before his retirement, joined the Premier League champions this week for his first training session. United have in the past loaned out promising youngsters to other sides to gain experience and there has been speculation that Zaha, who has yet to play in the Premier League, might return for a spell at previous club Crystal Palace. Palace boss Ian Holloway has effectively ruled that out and Moyes indicated the once-capped youngster was part of his plans. “He will travel with us on the tour,” he told talkSPORT radio before United’s departure to Thailand for a tour that starts in Bangkok on Saturday. “He has only been with us for two days but I will take him away, see how he goes and have a look. This club has a great record of putting young players in the team. Hopefully Wilfried can be one of them.” Moyes reiterated that striker Wayne Rooney, also on the tour, was not for sale and would not leave United. (Reuters)

ECB asks Kaneria to pay legal

cost of 2,00,000 pounds

Karachi: Problems continued to multiply for Pakistan’s disgraced leg-spinner Danish Kaneria, who has now been ordered to pay 2,00,000 pounds in costs by the disciplinary panel of the England and Wales Cricket Board. “My lawyers in London have been told by the ECB panel that I have to pay the total costs of 200,000 pounds which cover all legal costs for the ECB hearing held last year and the appeal proceedings this year,” Kaneria said here on Wednesday. “My lawyers are now looking into our next line of action which includes the option of approaching the High Court or going to the Court of Arbitration for Sports,” he said. Kaneria, whose international cricket career came to a halt in August 2010 after a spot-fixing scandal broke out in English county cricket in September 2009, was banned for life from playing in England by the ECB disciplinary commission last year in June which found him guilty of corruption and cheating. The ECB disciplinary panel had, earlier this month, dismissed Kaneria’s appeal against a life ban from cricket. The Pakistan Cricket Board also ratified his ban and suspended him for life from any involvement in the playing, organisation or administration of cricket in any form or manner under the jurisdiction of PCB. ICC congratulates Ireland on 2015 World Cup selection

Dubai: The ICC on Wednesday congratulated Ireland for becoming the first associate team to qualify for the 2015 Cricket World Cup, saying they played ‘extremely well’ and hoped the side will repeat their giant-killing performances of the 2007 and 2011 edition. Ireland became the first Affiliate side to qualify for the World Cup after its sixth round ICC World Cricket League Championship match against Netherlands ended in a tie on Tuesday. Ireland had won the first ODI on Sunday in Amstelveen by 88 runs. With top two teams in the WCL Championship qualifying for the 2015 World Cup, the result of one win and one tie means that Ireland has reached an unassailable tally of 20 points to open up a five point lead over Netherlands and Scotland. Ireland thus secured its qualification to the ICC’s flagship 50-over event, regardless of how the seventh and final round matches of the competition pan out. (Reuters)
