Centre extends financial help to poverty-stricken athlete

Chandigarh: Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs & Sports Jitendra Singh has approved a financial assistance of Rs 60,500 to former athlete Shanthi Soundarajan, who had won a silver medal in Asian Games 2006 at Doha but was later withdrawn after she was ineligible to compete in the female category because of female hyperandrogenism.

According to some reports earlier, Ms Soundarajan was found living in indigent circumstances, working as a daily wager at a brick kiln in Tamil Nadu.

Ms Soundarajan has applied for pursuing a regular National Institute of Sports diploma in coaching at the SAI Centre, Bengaluru.

The assistance will help her meet expenditure related to fee, lodging as well as a sports kit at SAI Centre. (UNI)
