TURA: Comprehensive survey of migrant workers and vulnerability mapping for child labour would shortly be undertaken in each and every district of Meghalaya for regulation of labour in the region.
Informing this, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner and Nodal Officer, District Task Force on Labour, Pravin Bakshi, said that the survey would be conducted by the gram sevaks/sevikas in every block, adding that the task is to be completed within the stipulated time on July 25 next to enable the State Government to submit the report to the Centre by July 31.
Sensitization workshops for inter-state migrant workers would be organized in the district as well as block levels, Bakshi informed.
Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma at a meeting here on Tuesday last had announced that compulsory registration of all the labourers and labour contractors would be carried out in the State. The registration would include the antecedents of the workers and contractors along with their address, age proof and probable place of stay, he said.
The District Task Force would also take steps to ensure safety and security of labourers by way of installation of video cameras and CCTVs in certain areas, the Deputy Commissioner said, adding that there is a move to have ‘peace squads’ in all the market places consisting of bazaar committee members, youth leaders and some government officials.
The District Task Force would also go for absolute ban on child labour, Bakshi said adding that children below 14 years of age should not be employed as domestic help and that all children in the age group of 6 – 14 years should be given the right to elementary education.
