SHILLONG: Following the resumption of air services from the Shillong airport at Umroi, the North East Council (NEC) is looking to rope in more private airline companies to operate from the airport.

The Umroi airport became functional after Alliance Air, a subsidy of Air India, resumed its direct flights between Shillong and Kolkata on July 10.

The NEC has invited bids from private airline companies to start their operations from Umroi, Dimapur, Tezpur and Lilabari airports. The last date for submission of bid is August 20.

Earlier, the NEC had requested for a fresh proposal and altogether seven bidders had responded to it.

However, sources from the NEC informed on Saturday that some of the private companies, who had earlier responded to the proposal, might not submit their bid as it would not suit their needs.

“However, we are confident of getting more bidders this time,” NEC sources said.

The NEC hoped that additional flights would start operating from the airport by the month of October this year.
