SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Monday said it was willing to work with the police department to check the increasing trend of drug abuse in the State, especially in Shillong.

“We are willing to work with the police in curbing this menace in the State especially in Shillong city where there is a huge inflow of students from various states of the Northeast who are often vulnerable to substance abuse,” KSU president Daniel Khyriem said.

The KSU leader also expressed concern over the recent report of the police on the possibility of East Khasi Hills surpassing Jaintia Hills as far as the number of drug users is concerned.

“This is a matter of concern not only for one department but the society as a whole,” Khyriem said.

The Union has also appealed to all the students to say no to substance abuse, adding that it is a ‘disease’ which could affect not only the individual but the society as a whole.

Sending a strong message to the drug peddlers who intend to lure young students, the KSU warned that it would be conducting inspections from time to time and if any person is caught by the Union, severe action would be taken against them.
