Mukul assumes charge as IFUNA chief

New Delhi: Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, who assumed charge as the Chairman of Indian Federation of United Nations Associations (IFUNA) on Monday, said that this prestigious organisation should spread its multifarious activities all over the country.

Dr Sangma also presided over its executive meeting here and asked the members, who came from different states, to prepare a calendar of activities to coincide with various days observed by the United Nations and its sister organisations.

“Its activities should also spread over different parts of the country including the North East,” he said.

The IFUNA was established more than four decades ago to promote the objectives of the United Nations and its specialized agencies.

Dr Sangma said that in conducting all these activities and programmes, efforts should be made to involve the leadership from all sections of society so as to make them broad-based and effective.

The IFUNA is affiliated with the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) and is the only body to represent India in the UN for a. It has a Meghalaya chapter too.

Galaxy of luminaries had adorned the office of president of IFUNA like late Vijaya Laxmi Pandit, former president of General Assembly UNO, Late Ram Krishana Hegde, former Union Minister and former Karnataka Chief Minister, Late Ram Niwas Mirdha, former Union Minister.
