NONGPOH: To ensure that the office goers do not enjoy an extended holiday of five days beginning Wednesday, the Ri Bhoi district administration has directed all head of departments in the district to mark any staff absent if they fail to attend to their duties on Thursday and Friday despite the RBYF announcing a two-day office picketing on these two days.

The DC’s order might play spoilsport to the plans of the government employees who were eyeing a five-day holiday. With Wednesday being a gazette holiday on account of U Tirot Sing Day and the office picketing scheduled for Thursday and Friday, the office goers were all set to have a long break of five days till Sunday.

A local public leader, who did not wish to be named, suggested that the Deputy Commissioner should compensate for the loss of two working days due to the office picketing by asking the employees to attend to their duties on two Saturdays.

A retired state government employee, however, supported the employees, saying that the State Government should take a cue from the Central government and implement the special casual leave for government employees during agitational programmes.

According to official sources, Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Akash Deep has called for submission of attendance sheets to his office before the end of the first half on Thursday and Friday and also to ensure safe custody of government vehicles to prevent any arson cases.

The DC has also called for a meeting of the all the Rangbah Shnong in the district on Wednesday at 11 am to discuss on the need for maintaining law and order in the district during the agitation.
