Shillong: Choosing to break his silence over his health condition which has been the cause of much media speculation, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said it is unfortunate that political rivals should use his health to unsettle him and create confusion in the minds of people.

Speaking to this correspondent Dr Sangma said, “Everyone gets sick once in a while especially if the body is subject to stress and strain. But to spread rumours about my illness is a ridiculous political ploy and everyone knows where that has originated from just by checking out the antecedents of the media publication that was chosen to spread the rumour,” Dr Sangma said.

When asked why he waited so long to clear the air since rumours about his health condition have been floating around for a while, Dr Sangma said it is pointless reacting to every speculation.

“Let the mischievous elements carry on with their malicious campaign. People will ultimately know their intent and they will be exposed. Most well wishers have sent their prayers and good wishes but political rivals seem determined to wish the worse,” the Chief Minister, who was in Delhi to attend the Tourism meet, said. “The people had reposed their confidence in the MUA government and gave us 29 out of 60 seats in the last elections. Under my leadership we managed to improve the number of seats in Garo Hills in from 7 to 13, whereas in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills the tally went down from 21 to 16 seats due to leadership tussle,” Dr Sangma said adding that the same disgruntled elements are spreading the vicious rumours about his health.
