SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Public Health department Dr RC Laloo said that the Centre recently earmarked over Rs 100 crore for the implementation of the Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) programme in the State.

The SWLM, that would mainly cater to waste management in rural areas, is scheduled to be implemented in the next five years.

Highlighting the basic objective of the programme, Dr Laloo said the Centre has come up with the initiative with an aim to protect human health and improve quality of life among people living in rural areas.

“The programme also aims to promote recycling and reuse of both solid and liquid waste besides converting bio waste into energy for ensuring greater energy security in rural areas,” Dr Laloo said.
