SHILLONG: The Ri Bhoi district administration has ordered an inquiry into the recent incident at Sabuda village under Raid Nongtung in Ri-Bhoi district in which an Assam Police team vandalized a kitchen shed of a lower primary school.

Informing this here on Monday, Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Akashdeep said the inquiry would be conducted by P Kharkongor, additional district magistrate.

“I have also taken up the matter with my Assam counterpart,” he said.

It is alleged that Assam police personnel, led by a Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Karbi Anglong district, had taken 30 bags of cement and iron rod meant for the kitchen shed which was under construction.

The incident irked the Dorbar Shnong of Sabuda and it lodged an FIR at Mawlasnai police outpost

According to the Deputy Commissioner, Assam Police team had not demolished the kitchen shed only prevented the ongoing construction since it is tantamount to violation of the status-quo agreement arrived at in the past.

“This particular school is under the administration of Assam as it is located two kilometers inside the Assam border,” he said adding that Assam Police on Monday returned the construction materials taken away by them.

It may be mentioned that the school, established in 1995, has been catering to around 40 students with two qualified teachers.

Meanwhile, the State Youth Wing of United Democratic Party (UDP) has asked the Meghalaya Government to act against the Assam government and has demanded a compensation from Assam on the damage that they have done to the school.
