Imphal: Prohibitory orders banning assembly of five or more persons have been imposed in Thoubal district of Manipur in view of the recent clashes, official sources said here ton Friday.

Quoting the orders issued by the district magistrate T Ranjit Singh, the sources said the prohibitory orders which was clamped in the district from July 22, would remain in force until further orders.

The sources said the orders were issued following the clashes between two communities over a piece of land in which an 11-year old boy identified as Md Najimuddin was killed on July 18 last.

Reports from Thoubal and neighbouring Chandel districts said there was exchange of fire between the two communities on July 18 last and the police opened fire to control the two warring groups. It was not known whose bullet hit the boy that day, reports said.

Trouble was brewing in the area since J. Korungthang, a village chief and a cousin of Chandel MLA, was killed by persons belonging to a different community a fortnight ago over the alleged land issue, the sources said.

Meanwhile, a non-Manipuri man has been shot dead by gunmen at an interior village in Imphal West district of Manipur, the police said on Friday.

The incident occurred when two gunmen from point blank range shot dead S K Shahajahan (38) who was a scrap collector on Thursday. No individual or group has claimed responsibility. (PTI)
