SHILLONG: The need to plant trees was highlighted during Vanamahotsava 2013 held on Thursday at Good Shepherd Higher Secondary School, Jongksha, East Khasi Hills organised by the Social Forestry Division.

Vanamahotsava, meaning festival of trees, is observed annually throughout the country during July with an objective to conserve forests and its resources as initiated by P Munshi, the then Union Minister of Agriculture in 1950. Principal Secretary, Forests and Environment M S Rao said that the festival of trees should also be a festival for the citizens, where every citizen is expected to plant and nurture one tree.
