SHILLONG: Police on Friday arrested a village head and two of his deputies for forcing an alleged witchcraft practitioner to eat human excreta at Mawryngkang village in Pynursla, East Khasi Hills district.

District Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang informed that the trio — Rangbah Shnong Kerini Khongit, assistant Rangbah Shnong Thwer Tynsong and village secretary Jwatbod Khongmalai — were arrested immediately after they surrendered before him on Friday and produced before a local court.

Kharkrang also informed that a police team led by the SDPO Sohra and the Additional District Magistrate had gone to Mawryngkang village to arrest them but they had absconded.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal had filed an FIR against the trio following the shocking incident on July 20 when the family of one Noping Khongsit was accused by the local Dorbar of practicing witchcraft (men ai ksuid in local dialect) and as punishment was forced to eat human excreta in front of the whole village.
