SHILLONG: Concerned over the rising crimes against women in the State, Social Welfare Minister Deborah Marak said that “Everybody has to awake themselves to tackle the menace.”

Marak said that she had also discussed the matter with the Home Minister and urged her to take steps to curb the crimes.

“State Police and women ministers should discuss the problem and take necessary actions to deal with it,” she said adding that the mindset of the people must also change in order to root out the crimes.

Altogether 116 cases of crime against women were reported in the State from January-May this year.

72 rape cases were also reported from across the State from January, 2013 till date.

Police statistics also reveal that there were 16 cases of molestation in the State this year.

Meanwhile, the Minister informed that the Social Welfare Department is organising various awareness programmes in schools and other places to tackle the problem.
