Editor,

The NGO leaders demanding the ILP deserve Oscar awards for “Best Actor in Horror Film”. They are now back to their favourite pastime of whipping up hatred against non-tribal Indians and trying to scare the hell out of tribals with lies and half-truths. Consider how enlightened these leaders are when they grandly proclaim that ILP will give us security against the “menace of non- tribals”. Menace? Who’s menacing whom here, is the question Marwein should answer first. Then they go one up and blame the rising crime rate on non-tribals (without any data of course). But then nobody takes them seriously these days. These people never have an answer about how they earn their living besides being non-salaried NGO leaders. In fact most NGO leaders in this State pry into everyone’s affairs but are very secretive about their own sources of income. They should first come clean on themselves before pointing fingers at others. Isn’t it a fact that they and their kind demand (and receive) preferential treatment in all government contracts and make a killing from land deals involving government projects? Let them answer these questions first before they ask us to consider their astronomically insane demands!

Yours etc.,

  Where are the law enforcers?

 Editor

Through this letter I wish to bring to the notice of the District Administration and the Superintendent of Police the sheer nuisance being created every Saturday night in the guise of enjoyment in front of O B Shopping Mall. From 10:30 pm onwards, one will notice a long line of cars parked on either side of the road and at 2:00 am young boys and girls emerge intoxicated. Each vehicle then becomes a Bar and the merry-making continues on the street accompanied by blaring music, dance and open drinking, which continues till 3:30 am to 4:00 am. The so-called young crowd also indulge in such shameful acts and nefarious activities that will shame any self respecting citizen… Sometimes one can see a Police patrol consisting of three or four personnel but instead of dispersing the crowd, they are busy gaping and ogling at the skimpily clad girls and shaking hands all around.

This brings to mind certain questions: 1. Has the nightclub in question been given special permission by the District Administration to keep its gates open till the wee hours of the morning? 2. Have the Police been “advised” to turn a blind eye to these activities? 3. Where is the Police Dept with their breath analysers to test the drivers of these vehicles? 4. The area around the nightclub in question is surrounded by Hotels frequented by tourists; is this the picture of “nightlife” we want to be publicised outside the state? 5. Where is the law enforcement machinery of state to enforce the Supreme Court’s order of 2005, where a complete ban has been placed on playing loud music or making any type of noise between 10 pm and 6 am? 6. Is the District Administration waiting for an untoward incident to happen before it swings into action, as had happened a couple of years ago where a young girl was brutally raped and murdered?

I would request the District Administration, the Home Minister and the Superintendent of Police to enforce strict timing restrictions and also enforce patrolling of this area at these timings especially on Saturday nights and to deal strictly with any violations, so as to pre-empt any untoward incident.

Yours etc.

 No support for ILP

 Editor,

The groups clamouring for Inner Line Permit in Meghalaya have neither the vision nor the credentials to make this demand on behalf of citizens. They are a narrow-minded and selfish lot who are raking up the issue to grab some headlines and lift up the beaten-down image of their respective groups. They do not speak for the people. Since they lack popular support they keep resorting to strong-arm tactics to make news. Clearly their leaders are only interested in becoming ministers and MLAs, just like their predecessors have done. For that, they are willing to lock us inside a cage called ILP. People have seen through their lies and there is no support for them except by their own kind. It is time to expose these fake patriots.

Yours etc.,
