SHILLONG: The State Government is unlikely to give in to the demand of the Meghalaya People’s Front (MPF) for a special session of the Assembly.
“The Government does not feel that the prevailing situation necessitates a special session of the Assembly. The Assembly session would be convened as per the normal schedule,” a senior Minister on condition of anonymity said here on Monday.
The Minister said that there were several other mechanisms by which the problems identified by the Opposition could be addressed.
“A special session is not the only option or platform for discussion as the government is ever ready to interact with anybody on any issue,” he added.
Earlier, the MPF had formally written to Assembly Speaker Abu Taher Mondal emphasizing on the need to hold a special Assembly session.
“We have askd the Assembly Speaker in the letter that there is an urgent need to hold a special session in view of the unabated influx problem and the deteriorating law and order situation in Garo Hills,” MPF spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh had said.
