SHILLONG: Shillong College on Tuesday ended its week-long Golden Jubilee celebration of ‘Teaching Science’ amidst huge participation of students from different schools and colleges in the city.
The week-long celebration which kick-started on July 23 and ended here on Tuesday saw several events being organised by the College which included the 1st International Seminar on Teaching Science in the city, panel discussions, exhibitions, talks, debates and Quiz competition.
The Golden Jubilee celebration of the Science department began on June 7 with the inauguration of an indoor stadium of the College by Union Minister for Human Resources Development Dr MM Pallam Raju.
Addressing the valedictory function on Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister Rowel Lyngdoh stressed on the need to inculcate elementary Science right from the root level till the higher levels. “Students who take up science should know the basic of science before pursuing higher levels in this field,” he said.
Stating that the future of the students lies in the hands of educationists, Lyngdoh said, “At the end of the day we have to depend on educationists to plan, design and shape the type of Science education for the children.”
It may be mentioned that during the inauguration of the International Seminar on ‘Attracting Best Talents in Basic Science’ organised by Shillong College on July 24, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma had promised to grant special scholarships to meritorious students on basic Science with an aim to boost Science education in the State and to encourage students to take up Science.
Dignitaries who attended the valedictory function included the college Principal Dr KD Ramsiej, Convener of the Golden Jubilee celebration of the college EN Dkhar, former Principal of the college Dr MPR Lyngdoh, principals of other schools and colleges, government officials and students, besides others.
