SHILLONG: Police on Wednesday arrested one Rahul Goenka and recovered 676 illegally activated SIM cards of BSNL, Idea, Reliance, Aircel and Airtel from his shop M/s Modern Tech at Mawlonghat. According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang, Goenka has been doing this business – selling SIM cards in the black market by using documents of other customers — for quite some time.

“We have been tracking this man for quite sometime,” Kharkrang said adding that police would try to find out if the accused was having any link with any militant outfit.

The SP also informed that he had summoned all the service operators to explain how a single person could get hold of so many SIM cards. “We believe that someone from within the head offices of the various service providers is involved in such illegal activities,” he added.

Goenka will be forwarded to a court on Thursday.
