SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills district administration is intending to involve all the stakeholders to launch an awareness campaign on the National Population Register (NPR) in Shillong and other parts of the district which will kick start by next week.

Informing this here on Thursday, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said that a discussion was held with the Shillong Municipal Board to discuss on the action plan for the campaign besides intending to penetrate right down to the localities in collaboration with SMB.

It was also informed that official notification was being processed for involving the local village authorities in the NPR enrolment process and the role of the traditional authorities will be defined in the notification to be issued soon.

The State government was forced to put on hold the enrollment drive after the KSU had intervened and stopped the drive from being carried out justifying that the enrolment camps were being organised despite an assurance by the State Government on July 19 that the enrolment under the NPR would be undertaken in Meghalaya only after proper awareness among the people of the State.

The KSU maintained that the Government should first familiarize the people with this new system of biometric enrolment so that the people can learn about the importance of NPR and its benefits.
