SHILLONG: Even as authorities in Meghalaya are in the dark about the presence of illegal stone quarries in the State, neighbouring Assam has decided to do its bit to restrict the unlawful trade.

Kamrup district administration has imposed Section 144 of the CrPC on Saturday, restricting the flow of trucks from 7 pm to 7am in Rani area of west Guwahati bordering Meghalaya. The route is allegedly being used by dumper trucks for transporting stones illegally mined in the portion of Meghalaya that shares its border with West Guwahati.  The transportation is carried out only at night.
The Ri Bhoi SP, however, said that though there are some stone quarries in the district, there is no input on the presence of illegal stone mining in Meghalaya. “Assam authorities have also never taken up the matter with us,” the SP said.
