SHILLONG: Power cuts in Garo Hills are commonly heard but the residents of Garo Hils can now heave a sigh of relief as the State Government is likely to commission the 132-KV Agia-Nangalbibra transmission line within this month.
Talking to The Shillong Times here on Monday, Power Minister Clement Marak said, “The work has finished and we are planning to commission it within this month itself.”
The major hurdle in the commissioning of the transmission line was sorted out after the State Government managed to get the land of Assam resident from where the Agia-Nangalbibra transmission line is supposed to pass.
The Power Minister informed that line testing has been completed from both sides and the line will be started most probably this month.
Though the State Government was targeting to complete the construction of the 132-KV Agia-Nangalbibra transmission line by March 2012, it could not be turned into a reality due to the pending court cases regarding the controversy over it which had erupted earlier.
The need for the additional transmission line was felt as Mawlai Nangalbibra transmission line posed frequent problems, getting snapped often due to the aged wires used.
The Agia-Nangalbibra transmission line would be able to draw power to Garo Hills during emergency situations.
It may be mentioned that the approved cost of the project is Rs 11.43 crore.
“I am happy that the new transmission line will benefit the entire Garo Hills,” minister told here on Monday.
