SHILLONG: Three security personnel of the Meghalaya Police accompanying Parliamentary Secretary, Marthon Sangma, were seriously injured after the driver of the hired Sumo in which they were travelling lost control of the vehicle at a place 2 km away from Chaygaon, under Kamrup in Assam at 4 pm on Tuesday. The Sumo was proceeding from Shillong towards Garo Hills.

The injured policemen identified as Vinay Kumar Singh, Lumlang Myrthong and M. Sangma were admitted at GNRC, Guwahti for treatment.

Accoridng to Sangma, one of the security personnel, M. Sangma was thrown out of the vehicle during the accident. The Sumo first hit a culvert and then a tree and subsequently rolled across the road, Sangma said, adding that they tried to reach out to the injured police personnel who was thrown out. While Sangma travelled in the Government allotted vehicle (Sumo) with his driver and PA behind, three policemen escorted them in the Sumo which, according to Sangma, was hired from the market.

Sangma blamed the police department for hiring the Sumo which was not fit to be used for the long route.

“It also appears that the civilian driver is untrained and moreover, to travel to the remote areas, Gypsy is ideal and not Sumo or Bolero,” he said.

Sangma has already taken up the matter with the police officials. ” I tried to contact the Home Minister, but could not get through. I will take up the matter as the legislators from Garo Hills very often travel to the militant infested areas of the region accompanied by security personnel in hired vehicles”, Sangma said.
