NONGSTOIN: The long awaited Nongstoin Urban Water Supply Scheme (NUWSS) that would act as an ‘oasis’ for the people of Nongstoin has caused a serious concern amongst the people here. Although the foundation stone for the scheme was laid on December 7, 2011 by the erstwhile Minister of PHED Shitlang Pale, the project is yet to be implemented.

The scheme at a whopping cost of Rs 133,94,12,700/- had roused the interest of local contractors who were vying to benefit from the project. It was during the tenure of former Chief Engineer (PHED) H Prasad that the scheme was sanctioned in early 2012. However, the scheme is yet to see the light of day in Nongstoin.

Deputy CM and PHED In-charge R C Laloo on Tuesday, visited Nongstoin and assured the people that the scheme would be implemented soon.

Allaying fears that the funds of the scheme were being diverted, Laloo said that funds allotted for specific schemes for specific places could not be diverted.

Speaking to The Shillong Times, Laloo said he would visit Nongstoin after August 15and then decide on the scheme. He also added that he would visit the Empower Committee to discuss matters on the scheme and would ask them to press the Financial Committee to release the funds soon.

Without answering directly on the rumours that the amount of the scheme was being reduced, Pale said “The scheme would ensure pure, safe and regular water supply to the people of Nongstoin.”
