TURA: The anti talks faction of the ULFA led by Paresh Barua, now known as ULFA (Independent), is strongly suspected to have supplied the claymore IED explosives to the GNLA for operational use given the close ties the two outfits share in the Garo Hills region.
As recently as a week ago, Tura police gunned down a suspected ULFA explosive expert, Sanjit Rabha (24), who was accompanying a group of GNLA militants and taking part in laying of an ambush to target security forces in Kherapara area of West Garo Hills district.
The ULFA is the dominant militant group of the north east which has in its arsenal an array of explosive materials and IEDs, both company made and improvised. A mutual pact between the GNLA and ULFA has benefitted both outfits at the expense of security forces which are fighting a long battle to eradicate militancy in Garo Hills.
The GNLA provides the ULFA cadres with shelter in its camps and safe passage to and fro Garo Hills while the Assam group in return strengthens the Garo group with sophisticated arms and imparts training in the use of explosives.
