JOWAI: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) and the Jaintia Youth Federation (JYF) have opposed the decision of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) to ban its staff from holding the post of Rangbah Shnong in their respective villages.

The JHADC has issued an order that all Rangbah Shnong who are employees of the District Council have to resign from the post within 20 days.

Leaders of JSU and JYF earlier met JHADC chief MB Rymbai and sought his clarification on the order issued against JHADC staff holding the post of Rangbah Shnong.

During the meeting, the CEM clarified that there are problems if employees of the District Council hold the post of Rangbah Shnong. On several occasions it has been found that the Rangbah Shnong cum JHADC staff have faced the dilemma of deciding whether they will side with the District Council or with the Dorbar Shnong with regards to important decisions. The problem is further compounded since the District Council is the competent authority that has the power to appoint and recognize the Rangbah Shnong.

The JYF and the JSU, however, informed that the CEM’s clarification is not acceptable and they have asked the District Council to keep the order in abeyance and consider it for further review.

“We also demand that the JHADC or the Executive Committee of the District Council should seek the views and suggestions of the people in this regard,” JYF president P Majaw said.
