SHILLONG: Stalemate over the biometric enrollment for National Population Register (NPR) continued as the meeting between East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Sanjay Goyal and the various NGOs on the issue remained inconclusive on Thursday.
The meeting intended to reach a common ground so as to restart the enrollment required for issuing the UIN (Unique Identification Number). The State Government was forced to put on hold the enrollment drive after KSU’s intervention. The students’ body has demanded that people should be educated on the new system before it is implemented in the State.
“Nothing concrete evolved during the meeting. We are still not convinced with the proposal of accepting the biometric enrollment,” KSU president Daniel Khyriem said after the meeting.
The NGOs stressed on involving the traditional heads in the whole exercise while urging that a mechanism be put in place to authenticate documents before issuing the UIN.
Meanwhile, in what could be termed as the only positive from the meeting, the NGOs agreed to submit to the Deputy Commissioner in writing the problems/issues relating to NPR so that the same can be addressed during the next session.
The enrollment for UIN commenced in the municipal area with the then Meghalaya Governor RS Mooshahary in June. The biometric enrollment is a part of the second phase of data collection for the NPR.
