SHILLONG: The UDP-led opposition alliance Meghalaya People’s Forum (MPF) has threatened to take to the agitational path if the Congress-led MUA Government continues to shy away from its responsibilities of addressing the issues affecting the State.

“The present Government continues to shy away from its responsibilities. The Government is hoping that the issues would resolve on their own without doing anything,” MPF spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh said on Sunday.

He said that the Government has not responded to the growing demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to check the problem of influx and flow of illegal immigrants.

“The Government has allowed the situation to aggravate and now the NGOs are taking recourse to aggression to demand implementation of the ILP. I fail to understand why the Government is not taking cognizance of the recommendations of the High Level Committee (HLC) on Influx headed by former Deputy Chief Minister Bindo M Lanong,” Lyngdoh said.

Stating that it was the previous Congress-led Government which has constituted this committee, Lyngdoh also lamented the delay in tabling the report of the HLC before the Cabinet.

“As of now it is the only Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma who is talking about the ILP. The whole Cabinet should have been taken into confidence since even the HLC has recommended the implementation of the ILP. This only shows that there is lack of collective responsibility in this Government,” the MPF spokesperson said.

He said that the Government has also failed to take stock a host of other issues especially the law and order situation in Garo Hills.

Lyngdoh also criticized the Government for not responding to the opposition’s demand for a special Assembly session.

“The Legislature is a paramount body. In a democratic set up, the Executive (Government) should always take the Legislature into confidence on any important issues concerning the State,” Lyngdoh said.

Asserting that the MPF would not remain a mute spectator to this negative attitude of the Government, Lyngdoh said, “We would not hesitate to take to the agitational path if the situation demands.”
