NONGSTOIN: Mystery shrouding the recovery of an unclaimed corpse of a new-born from near a bridge at Nongspung in West Khasi Hills District on Saturday finally cleared on Monday with the arrest of one Dominic R Marak (59) of Nengshigre village under Shallang PS.
The body, put inside a paper box, was found by villagers of Ksehkohlong and Nongspung on August 10 at around 8 AM.
Police on Monday informed that one Sajida R Marak (20) of the same village had been admitted at Shallang Hospital following labour pain from where she was referred to Riangdo CHC and again to Nongstoin Civil Hospital. Owing to complications, doctors at the Nongstoin Civil Hospital referred her to Ganesh Das Hospital, Shillong, where she gave birth to a still-born baby.
The mother, later, asked her uncle Dominic R Marak to give the body to the hospital authorities for a proper burial. Having no money to pay to the hospital staff for the burial, Dominic took the corpse and headed back home.
On the way to his village Nengshigre, he dumped the body at Nongspung, police stated.
Following investigation into the matter, Nongstoin police located Dominic at his village and asked Shallang Police to take him into custody.
However, Dominic surrendered before Shallang Police on learning of the matter.
Dominic later confessed to the police that he had got rid of the corpse as it had begun to smell. However, police authorities at Nongstoin PS claim that when the corpse was recovered, it was devoid of any odour as was claimed by Dominic.
Dominic is currently in lock-up at the Nongstoin Police Station.
