TURA: A mob from Sesengpara village close to the international border with Bangladesh killed two persons after they were caught inside their village late Monday night in the Dalu-Purakhasia region of West Garo Hills district.

Village Defence Party (VDP) members and members of the public attacked Himanta Koch and Sujol Koch, both hailing from nearby Nokchi village, in Sesengpara area at 2 am after they were reportedly caught inside the village.

The villagers claim that the two had entered their village to commit crime and were allegedly involved in extortion also. The villagers had initially taken the duo to be Bangladeshi dacoits who had crossed over to commit crime. What prompted the two victims to be present in Sesengpara village, away from their homes in Nokchi, so late at night remains a mystery even as police teams have taken custody of the bodies and begun investigations.

There have been several incidents of public hanging in the Garo Hills region in the last few months with close to a dozen losing their lives, many of them extortionists.
