SHILLONG: The Mait Shaphrang Movement (MSM) which pursuing the implementation of Compulsory Registration Marriage Act in the State has asked Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma to expedite the process of framing rules for the Act.

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister on Tuesday, MSM convener Michael Syiem urged the Government to prioritize framing the rules without further delay.

Expressing his concern over the increasing number of broken marriages in the society, Syiem said that the Government must act quickly on framing the rules.

The State Cabinet had, last year, approved the proposed Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Bill, 2011 which was subsequently passed by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

The proposed Bill will include compulsory registration of all marriages belonging to any caste, tribe or religion and also consists of registration of re-marriages and live-in relationships.
