SHILLONG: In view of a bandh call given by Khasi Hills based militant outfit HNLC from 1 am to 5. 30 pm on Thursday, the Government has made elaborate arrangements to ensure peaceful Independence Day celebrations.

Meghalaya Director general of Police (DGP) Peter James Pyngrope Hanaman told reporters on Wednesday that the police have made all necessary security arrangements to ensure that the bandh does not affect the celebrations.

“We are prepared to see that there is peace and security in Shillong,” the DGP said.

Incidentally, none of the militant groups who are active in the volatile Garo Hills region have issued any bandh call.

However, the security forces are on alert to ensure peace in Garo Hills, the DGP said.

The Home department is also keeping a close watch on the Garo Hills situation to prevent any communal clashes or otherwise.

The Government has organised a series of programmes aiming for maximum participation of the people during the Independence Day celebrations.

The Government is hopeful of a large turnout due to the various initiatives taken by the authorities.
