SHILLONG: Condemning the recent killing of three people for allegedly practicing witchcraft, Arch Bishop Dominic Jala said that people should not take law into their own hands.

“We should learn to respect human dignity and human life. No one has the right to take away a precious life,” Jala said here on Sunday.

The Arch Bishop also said, “There can be power of evil which can harm and affect our life. As Christians, we can fight the power of evil with the power of our Lord”.

“I urge the people not to be swayed by those who try to mislead them,” the Arch Bishop said while suggesting that there should be a public debate on the issue.

While replying to a query, he said that since time immemorial, there is traditional belief among the Khasis that there are people who seek to use evil influence to harm others. “There is another belief that there are people who resort to evil powers to enhance wealth or material possession,” Jala said.

“We also need to condemn if there people who really indulge in such evil practices for lure of wealth and other material possession,” Arch Bishop said. If such practices exist, they should also be condemned.

Meanwhile, the CSWO also condemned the incident.
