Youth picked for Asia Pacific Special Olympics

SHILLONG: Nangkiewlang Pahsyntiew, a student of Dwar Jingkyrmen, a school for children in need of special education, has been chosen by the Union Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs to represent India at the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games, according to a press release issued on Sunday.

The Games will be held from December 1-7 in the Australian city of Newcastle.

Over 2,000 Special Olympics athletes are expected to take part in the event, accompanied by 600 coaches and officials.

An estimated 200,000 spectators from around 30 countries in the Asia Pacific region are also expected to cheer the athletes on.

These Games will be the first Special Olympics held for the Asia Pacific region.

The goal of the Special Olympics is to provide sports training and competition in various Olympic-type sports for children and adults with an intellectual disability with the aim of giving them continuing opportunities to develop their physical fitness and courage while also building relationships with other athletes and the community.
