SHILLONG: Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW), Theilin Phanbuh, has asked State Chief Secretary WMS Pariat to take steps to ban pornographic sites from the internet, which according to her is responsible for the growing number of rape cases involving minors in Meghalaya.

Expressing her views to The Shillong Times, Phanbuh said there is an urgent need to ban pornographic sites from the internet adding that the matter has been taken up with the Chief Secretary on Tuesday last. The MSCW Chairperson has also urged the Chief Secretary to prevail upon the BSNL to bring about a blanket ban on pornographic sites.

“Internet and television are one of the major causes which influence the young minds and banning unwanted sites from the internet could help tackle this problem,” Phanbuh said, while adding that the Commission is worried about the increasing rate of crimes committed by minors.
