SHILLONG: The final of the First Rev Fr Joseph Arokiasamy Memorial Inter-College Football Tournament was played out on Tuesday at the Don Bosco Mini Stadium, Laitunkhrah, amidst the chanting and cheering of enthusiastic fans and spectators.

In a hard-fought game, Union Christian College emerged the winners, beating St Anthony’s College 2-0 through a brace by Ngaminlein.

Each team looked eager and ready to take the game to the next level with some good teamwork.

At the outset of the match, Rev Fe Sagi Stephen, Rector of the St. Anthony’s College Community, spoke on the significance of organizsing such an august tournament and hoped that the participants will imbibe the best virtues that the sport has to offer and leave the field inspired to pursue their dreams and aspirations in the future.

Ngaminlein struck the first blow in the 22nd minute of the match, netting the ball to send UCC into the lead in the first half.

With plenty of time to play, the Anthonians threw themselves into the attack, fighting valiantly to restore parity, but they were unable to convert their chances into goals.

Just when it appeared that the match would end 1-0 or in a draw, Ngaminlein scored again in the 88th minute thanks to some terrific footwork by the youngster.

Dr Sylvanus Lamare, the Principal of St Edmund’s College and the Chief Guest at the Concluding Ceremony of the tournament, congratulated the winning team and applauded the sporting spirit displayed by both sides during the tournament.

The award for the Best Scorer of the tournament was given to Ngaminlein, representing the Union Christian College; the award for Best Player of the tournament was given to Bisharlang Kharumnuid of St Anthony’s College.

The award for the Best Team was given to Buddha Bhanu Saraswati College.
