TURA: Suspected GNLA militants went on a major criminal offensive executing a villager in front of his family in Ruga area and lobbing a grenade at Jadigittim market in South Garo Hills. The outfit is also a prime suspect in the kidnapping of a Block gram sevak of Dadenggre which took place late on Monday night.

As many as thirteen heavily armed GNLA militants under the command of one Kongsil descended on Rangmai village of Ruga region, 25 kms from Chokpot, on Tuesday morning at around 5 am and targeted a family on suspicion that they were police collaborators.

The militants dragged out and shot dead one Jenifar N Sangma (47) in front of his family and severely assaulted his teenage son leading to his collapse.

Strangely, the militants claimed that the deceased was a police informer even though security forces had previously arrested Sangma on suspicion of him being an over ground worker of the outfit.

Meanwhile, on the same morning, a youth posing as a labourer walked up to the front of a wine store at Jadigittim market in Nangalbibra, and lobbed a hand grenade before fleeing from the scene. The explosion sent shrapnel all around hitting one civilian who sustained minor injuries.

In another incident, a group of militants suspected to belong to the GNLA whisked away at gunpoint a Gram Sevak and his companion when they were returning from an inspection of their circle in Rongdupara, near Chibinang.

Gram sevak Mozibur Rahman had gone to Rongdupara for the inspection with a friend on a motorcycle during the day. While returning towards the evening their two wheeler developed a snag in a isolated part of the Rongdupara-Chibinang road, 18 km from the town. According to reports, the gram sevak, who hails from Puskonipara area of Chibinang, was last heard calling up his family to inform that he was being abducted.

East Garo Hills bandh: The Garo Students Union, East Zone, headquartered in Williamnagar, has called for a 12-hour East Garo Hills bandh on Friday demanding upgradation of the Williamnagar Government College.

The GSU wants sufficient appointment of lecturers and office staff in various posts after MPSC interviews. It also wants adequate funding for college infrastructure, reading and study material, holding of morning shift classes among others. The student body informed that the bandh would be from 5 am to 5 pm.
