MPUF chief arrested

 SHILLONG: West Jaintia Hills Police on Wednesday arrested Meghalaya People United Front (MPUF) president Dapoiwanmi Laloo for wrongly restraining 93 non-tribal labourers at Jowai on August 17.

According to an FIR lodged by the circle inspector, Jowai GU Wahlang, on August 17 morning, members of MPUF led by its president Dapoiwanmi Laloo had stopped vehicles coming from Karbi Anglong District, Assam at 8th Mile (WJH) and wrongly restrained 93 non-tribal labourers and took them to MPUF office at Jowai. Acting on a news report appeared in a section of the Press (including The Shillong Times), police registered a case under various sections of IPC and arrested Laloo. The labourers were taken to the MPUF office in Jowai and on failing to produce valid documents, they were made to hold their ears and do sit-ups.

Meanwhile, the members of the MPUF have expressed their disappointment over the arrest of their president stating that Laloo was arrested simply for apprehending illegal migrants after enquiring about their labour licenses.
