Guwahati: Along with the entire country Assam Photojournalists’ Association (APJA) has also condemned the incident of rape of a fellow photojournalist which took place in middle of Mumbai on Thursday evening while she was working on an assignment.

The members of APJA have expressed solidarity with the fellow journalist who is undergoing treatment and suffering from the trauma.

The APJA has also demanded the Government of Maharashtra and her employer to facilitate proper medical care for her.

Staging a silent protest in Guwahati on Saturday APJA also demanded stern action against the culprits and asked the government to take appropriate measures to ensure that such an incident is not repeated in future.

“We are raising our voice against such a heinous crime. We want proper actions to be taken against those accused who have been nabbed by police. If the environment in our country continues to remain so hostile towards women, people will fear to visit our country. We feel ashamed in front of the world for being citizens of a country where people do not know how to respect a woman,” rued APJA president and senior photojournalist Rajib Bhattacharjee.

The photojournalists’ body staged a silent protest in front of Guwahati Press Club with the members covering their mouths with a piece of black cloth.

All the journalists from different media organizations both from print and electronic media participated in the protest.
