SHILLONG: In a decision that is sure to have State-wide ramifications, the West Garo Hills district administration has prohibited students from taking part in any agitation called in demand for a separate Garo state, in line with the spirit of the Right to Education Act.

West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi issued an order on Friday to all organisations, which are sponsoring or organising agitations in demand for a separate Garo state, asking them not to involve school students.

The order assumes significance since a sit-in demonstration is scheduled from August 26 to 30 in West Garo Hills, South Garo Hills and East Garo Hills districts.

When contacted, Bakshi said that he was following the spirit of the Right to Education Act that allows normal and unhindered access to education.

“Taking away children forcefully to ensure their participation in any agitations is not desirable,” he added.
