SHILLONG: Painting a rather encouraging picture of the power scenario in the State, Power Minister Clement Marak has claimed that the State is selling around 60 MW power to other agencies.
Speaking to The Shillong Times here on Monday, Marak said that this was a good sign for the power-starved Meghalaya which has borne the brunt of load shedding in the past.
“The power which is being sold by the State can be swapped during lean seasons,” he said.
“The state is able to produce nearly 149 MW on its own against the domestic demand of 166 MW,” he said while expressing happiness over the performance of Myntdu Leshka Hydro Power project.
According to Marak, the State at present is procuring 132 MW from NEEPCO, 30 MW from NTPC and 8 MW of power from NHPC.
He advocated on the need to provide power supply to the industries of the State as the tariff for the industries in the State was high.
The Minister, meanwhile, expressed concern over the water level of Umiam reservoir which can generate upto 185 MW. He said the water level at the reservoir is around 3191 feet while the maximum storage capacity of the dam is 3200 feet.
When asked about the Agia-Nangalbibra transmission line, he said the power supply has commenced from the newly installed line and it will be inaugurated soon after the completion of the sub-station at Mendipathar.
The Mawlai-Nangalbibra transmission line is thirty years old and is now slotted to function as a standby transmission line.
